The Summer Time Blues and Low Lake Level!

Hello friends and fellow anglers,

Since my last report, fishing conditions have not improved and the lake has fallen even more. With the lake level @ just over 167 m. s. l. all we can hope for is some cool temperatures to turn the fish on a little bit in the weeks to come.

Bass fishing has been slow for the past couple of months. Hot surface water temps. in the upper 80’s and low 90’s have pushed the bass deep for the most part. On occasion you’ll find some school fish busting shad but they are mostly scattered.

The pattern’s that are working at this time are top water chuggers when bass come up or are chasing shad. Carolina rigged worms or Texas rigged worm in deep water 20 plus ft. Shaky head worm rigs or drop shot rigs are producing. Deep diving crank baits and spoons will work well too if you find the sweet spot where the bass are suspended.

Areas to look for are the old submerged road beds, river points, main creek points. Look for the deep drop offs along these areas with structure such as stumps, hydrilla, or main maid brush piles.

Crappie have started to bite a little better in the past couple of weeks on deep man made brush piles but the action is still slow with the catch ratio in the 20’s on a half day outing. Live shiners and jigs both work well but would advise having both because some days they prefer live shiners and some days they prefer jigs. If I knew why I could probably solve the mysteries of fishing! Go Figure!!

The main thing to keep in mind is that it is fishing and to enjoy the day no matter if your catching them faster than you can count or not getting a bite.

The weather conditions have been brutal this summer and it’s not over yet. Be prepared when you fish at this time with lots of fluids and sun screen. We have had one of the hottest summers on record and it’s not over yet.

Be safe and courteous to other fishermen. For guide service give me a call and I hope to see you on the water.
